KEENE, N.H. – Junior Alex Horne (Harvard, MA) scored two goals, including the game-winner with 3:44 remaining, to give Keene State College a 2-1 non-conference men's soccer victory over Western New England College at the Owl Athletic Complex Tuesday night (Oct. 16).
The Golden Bears, which saw their two-game winning streak come to end, are now 9-5-2. All of WNEC's losses this season have been by one goal. Undefeated in their last seven games, the Owls improve to 7-4-4.
Horne's winner, his team best seventh goal of the season, was set up on a crossing ball from freshman Ian Kelly (Taunton, MA).
After a scorless first half, Horne put the Owls ahead 1-0 in the 53rd minute with an assist from freshman Eric Martens (Peterborough, NH).
Western New England College tied the match just 13 seconds later on an unassisted goal by senior Mike Stewart (Springfield, MA) who fired a shot that found the top corner of the net. This was his third goal of the season.
The Golden Bears had a chance to get the equalizer with 1:28 to play, but senior goalkeeper Cal Mintz (Westport, CT) (six saves) came out of the net and corralled a header by junior Brian Dill (Portland, CT).
Senior goalie Steve Hennessey (Essex Junction, VT) finished with nine stops for Western New England College.
