Jess Covino and Heather Mortell lead Western New England College over Endicott

Box Score

BEVERLY, Mass. - Sophomore goalkeeper Jess Covino (Bristol, CT) provided the defense and freshman forward Heather Mortell (Webster, MA) supplied the offense with the only goal of the match as the Western New England College women's soccer team came through with another quality performance in a 1-0 victory over host Endicott Saturday afternoon (Oct. 20).

The Golden Bears moved one step closer to capturing The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) regular season title ater improving their league record to 10-0-2 and 13-3-2 overall.

WNEC can claim the crown with a win over Gordon in its regular season finale on Wednesday (Oct. 24).

Covino had six saves to earn her 11th shutout, which was the Golden Bears 13th of the campaign.

Western New England College's talented defensive unit has allowed only 10 goals in 18 contests this fall.

Mortell, meanwhile, delivered her team best 13th goal of the season (and seventh game-winner) in the 43rd minute past the outstretched arms of Endicott goalie Amy Meuse.

The Gulls (12-5, 10-2 TCCC) had a chance to tie the match with 15 minutes left in the second half when Paula McGinn sent a shot on goal that Covino tipped over the net. On the ensuing corner kick, McGinn headed the ball just wide of the goal.
