WENHAM, Mass. - Senior Kierstan Hess (Santa Barbara, CA) had a goal and assist to lead Gordon College to a 3-1 upset victory over visiting Western New England College Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 24) in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) women's soccer match in the regular season finale for both squads.
This was the first conference loss for the Golden Bears who wind up second in the league with a 10-1-2 mark, a point behind Endicott (11-2) in the final standings. The conference awards three points for a win and one point for a tie.
Hess opened the scoring just 6:16 into the contest and the Fighting Scots took a 2-0 lead into the break when junior Kristen Groff (Lititz, PA) netted a goal in the 43rd minute.
Western New England College got on the board when freshman Victoria Schmidt (Amityville, NY) gained her first goal of the season in the 54th minute.
Junior Amanda Whittet (Rye, NH) added an insurance goal, with an assist from Hess, in the 88th minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper Abby Ytzen (Des Moines, IA) finished with six saves for Gordon (12-5-1) who now has a 9-3-1 conference mark.
Sophomore goalie Jessica Covino (Bristol, CT) stopped eight shots for the Golden Bears.
Western New England College (13-4-2) will host seventh-seeded Colby-Sawyer on Saturday (Oct. 27) in a quarterfinal round match of TCCC Tournament at a time to be announced.
