SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Second-seeded Western New England College and seventh-seeded Colby-Sawyer battled to a 0-0 double overtime tie in a quarterfinal round game of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Women's Soccer Tournament Saturday (Oct. 27), but the Golden Bears advanced to the next round after taking a 4-2 edge in the penalty kick shootout.
The teams played a similar 0-0 double overtime tie in their regular season meeting two weeks ago in Springfield.
Despite the wet field conditions, this was a well-played match with both squads missing chances to score thanks to outstanding goalkeeping.
The Chargers (8-8-2) almost tallied an own goal in the 74th minute when a WNEC player almost knocked a misplayed ball into the net. WNEC senior midfielder Stephanie Bibbo (Millville, MA) made an alert play to kick the ball away.
Colby-Sawyer junior goalie Christina Quirk (Milford, CT) made a nice save on a close shot by freshman forward Heather Mortell (Webster, MA) off a corner kick with 2:50 remaining in the first overtime. Quirk (seven saves for her eighth shutout) then made another fine stop on a shot by sophomore Angela Zguro (East Longmeadow, MA) in the second overtime.
In the shootout, Colby-Sawyer and Western New England College each scored on their first attempts before sophomore goalie Jessica Covino (Bristol, CT) saved the day for the Golden Bears with two consecutive stops. She finished with four saves in compiling her 13th shutout of the season.
Sophomore midfielder Kelly Murnane (Cheshire, CT), Zguro, freshman midfielder Shannon Pescatello (Wethersfield, CT), and Mortell scored in the shootout for the Golden Bears. Sophomore back Eileen Endyke (Derry, NH) and junior forward Elise Kapp (Yarmouthport, MA) hit the back of the net for the visitors.
Western New England College (13-4-3) will host third-seeded Roger Williams (a 3-1 winner over sixth-seeded Wentworth) in a semifinal round match on Wednesday (Oct. 31).
