SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Freshman defender Taryn Mancarella (Rochester, NY) netted the game-winner in the 36th minute to lead third-seeded Roger Williams University to a 1-0 victory over second-seeded Western New England College in a semifinal round match of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Women's Soccer Tournament Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 31) at Suprenant Field.
The Hawks (15-4-1) will play either top-seeded Endicott or fifth-seeded Gordon in the championship match at the highest seed on Saturday. RWU will be making its third consecutive appearance in the conference tournament final after finishing as runners-up to Endicott the last two seasons.
Mancarella tallied only her second goal of the season following a corner kick that hit a Golden Bears' defender. She fired a quick shot that hooked into the left corner of the net.
Western New England College held a 12-8 advantage in shots, but couldn't convert any scoring opportunities in dropping the rematch with Roger Williams. The Golden Bears edged the Hawks 2-1 on September 29 in Springfield.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jen Garside (Londonderry, NH) had two saves for the visitors in raising her record to 8-3-1.
Sophomore keeper Jess Covino (Bristol, CT) stopped three shots for the Golden Bears to finish with a 13-5-3 mark in her first year as the starter.
The Golden Bears (13-5-3) will be among the schools considered for an invitation to the ECAC Division III New England Tournament. Those pairings will be announced on Monday (Nov. 5).
