NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Western New England College scored the first and last touchdowns of the game, but host UMass Dartmouth tallied all its points in between for a 34-14 victory in a New England Football Conference (NEFC) Boyd Division contest Saturday afternoon (Oct. 6) at Cressy Field.
This was the third straight division loss for the Golden Bears who fall to 2-4 overall. The Corsairs even their record at 3-3 and improve to 2-1 in the Boyd Division.
Junior running back J.T. Harold (North Andover, MA) ran for four touchdowns and a game high 101 yards for the hosts. Junior quarterback Alex Garro (Mattapoisett, MA) completed 12-of-15 passes for 206 yards and ran for the other score.
With Justin Walz (Groton, CT) out with an injury, sophomore quarterback Tim Hegarty (Bridgewater, MA) made his first collegiate start at quarterback and led the Golden Bears to a touchdown on the first possession of the game. He scored his first touchdown on a one-yard run to cap a 10-play, 70-yard scoring drive only 4:14 into the contest.
Hegarty finished the day by completing 11-of-19 passes for 65 yards with two interceptions.
Garro and Harold each ran three yards for touchdowns to give the Corsairs a 14-7 lead after the opening period. Harold ran five yards at the 8:39 mark of the second quarter as UMD took a 20-7 advantage into halftime. He added runs of 19 and 11 yards in the third stanza to break the game open.
The Golden Bears scored their final points on a six-yard run by sophomore running back Chris Winn (Norwich, CT) (5 carries, 43 yards) early in the final quarter. It was his first collegiate touchdowns as well.
Junior back Jordan Capitanio (Torrington, CT) led Western New England College with 87 yards on 14 carries. Freshman Justin Paroby (Taylor, PA) saw his first action at quarterback completing 8-of-14 passes for 49 yards with an interception. He also ran for 57 yards on 10 carries. Sophomore Rob Chiacco (Groton, CT) led the receivers with four catches for 30 yards.
Freshman strong safety Joe Begnal (Waterbury, CT) compiled12 tackles while freshman defensive back Ben Ross (Pawling, NY) had eight tackles (including two-and-a-half sacks) and a fumble recovery.
UMass Dartmouth out-gained Western New England College by a 452 to 319 margin.
