Freshman Taryn Belowsky named to All-Tournament Team
BABSON PARK, Mass. - Senior guard Jen Dabrowski (Plainville, CT) scored 25 points, including a pair of clutch free throws with 22 seconds remaining, to lead the Western New England College women's basketball team to a 77-73 victory over host Babson in the championship game of the Babson Invitational Tournament Sunday (Nov. 18).
Dabrowski was named the Tournament MVP after scoring 47 points and grabbing 18 rebounds in two games (she had 22 points Saturday night in a 73-64 win over Williams). The sharp-shooting standout also was 17-for-20 from the foul line.
Freshman guards Lauren Stock (Rocky Hill, CT) and Taryn Belowsky (New Haven, CT) played key roles against Babson with 18 and 15 points, respectively. Belowsky, who made 6-of-7 shots from the field (3-of-4 three pointers), made the All-Tournament Team. Stock connected on 7-of-12 shots from the field and had a team high eight rebounds.
Senior guard Tiffany DeRosa (Hamden, CT) also finished in double figures with 13 points after making a free throw with seven seconds left that made it a two-posession game. She also had three steals.
Western New England College (2-0) enjoyed a strong start taking a 41-30 lead at halftime before extending its margin to 18 at 53-35 following a jumper by Stock with 14:58 remaining in the game.
Belowsky drained a three-pointer that gave the Golden Bears a 70-56 advantage with 7:24 left before the hosts staged a dramatic comeback.
Babson (1-1) held WNEC scoreless for over four minutes and used an 8-0 run to pull within 70-64 at the 3:05 mark.
The Beavers continued to chip away at the lead and finally got within a point (74-73) on a layup by freshman guard Rebecca Bowman (Melrose, MA) with 23 seconds remaining.
Dabrowski then made a pair of foul shots to push the lead to three and after Babson missed a three-pointer, DeRosa converted one of two free throws with 7.7 seconds left to complete the scoring.
Senior forward Linsey Poulson (Leominster, MA) scored 23 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for Babson while senior guards Caitlin Boulier (Wolcott, CT) and Caitlin Fenn (Niantic, CT) each chipped-in with 14 points.
Western New England College shot an impressive 52.6% from the field while Babson made a respectable 42.6% of its shots from the field.
