Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" Junior forward Jim Bayne (Bristol, CT) scored 16 points, including the 1,000th of his career, and junior guard Ryan Hernandez (Hampton Bays, NY) scored a game high 23 points as Western New England College men’s basketball team completed its regular season with a convincing 92-54 non-league victory over visiting Southern Vermont College Saturday (Feb. 17) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
This was the 10th consecutive victory for the Golden Bears who have an 18-7 record and the top seed entering the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament that begins Tuesday (Feb. 20) at home against an opponent to be determined.
Western New England College started the game with a 12-0 run capped by Bayne’s lay-up that pushed him over the 1,000 mark. Bayne, who had a team high eight rebounds, is the 19th player in program history to reach the milestone.
The Golden Bears led 46-25 at half-time and shot a season best 56.7% from the field in finishing with their highest scoring total of the season.
Junior guard Asif Abdul-Wadud (Springfield, MA) contributed 14 points, five assists, and four steals while sophomore forward Kyle Fredette (Wallingford, VT) added 11 points (5-for-5 from the field) and six rebounds. Hernandez made 9-of-16 shots, including five three-pointers.
Before the game Western New England College honored its three seniors, centers Malik Champlain (Norwich, CT) and Deon Thomas (Albany, NY), and forward Peter Stathakis (North Attleboro, MA), during Senior Day festivities.
Southern Vermont had three players in double figures led by junior forward Nick Harrington (Brooklyn, NY) who had a double-double with 19 points and a game high 13 rebounds in a strong performance.
Senior guard Chris Matte (Hudson Falls, NY) netted 16 points and dished out five assists while freshman forward Joe Karnik (Castleton, NY) chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Mountaineers finished the season with a 7-14 record.
