Golden Bears rout Eagles in GNAC Tournament for 11th straight victory

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" Junior forward Jim Bayne (Bristol, CT) scored 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds as top-seeded Western New England College rolled to an easy 81-50 victory over eighth-seeded Daniel Webster College in a quarterfinal round game of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men’s Basketball Tournament Tuesday night (Feb. 20) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

This was the 11th consecutive win for the Golden Bears who raised their record to 19-7.

Sophomore forward Kyle Fredette (Wallingford, VT) added 14 points and six rebounds while junior guard Ryan Hernandez (Hampton Bays, NY) contributed 11 points coming off the bench. Sophomore guard Matt Maynard (Paterson, NJ) had nine points and six rebounds while junior guard Asif Abdul-Wadud (Springfield, MA) netted six points with seven assists.

Daniel Webster received 10 points from both junior guard Ryan Middlemiss (Methuen, MA) and freshman guard Jamie Bryant (Hartford, CT). The Eagles finish the season with a 6-18 record.

Western New England College will host fifth-seeded Emmanuel (a 60-55 winner at fourth-seeded Norwich) in a semifinal game of the GNAC Tournament at 7:00 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 22).

In other games Tuesday night, seventh-seeded Suffolk shocked second-seeded Emerson 80-75 and third-seeded Rivier defeated sixth-seeded Johnson & Wales 88-76 in overtime.
