Kayte Devine nets game-winner as Western New England College downs Roger Williams in overtime

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior Kayte Devine (New Fairfield, CT) scored five goals, including the game-winner with 52.3 seconds remaining in the second overtime period, to lead the Western New England College women's lacrosse team to a thrilling 15-14 victory over Roger Williams University Monday (April 2) in a non-league game.

Sophomore Lindsey Fenton (Amherst, MA) contributed five goals and an assist for the Golden Bears who evened their record at 3-3. Senior Audrey Kelton (Wilder, VT) added a goal (the 100th of her career) along with three assists. Senior Jess Vogel (Tonawanda, NY) chipped in with two goals and two assists while sophomore Michelle Thompson (Wilbraham, MA) had two goals and an assist.

Sophomore Brie Sylvia (West Tisbury, MA) played her best game of the season finishing with 17 saves, including key saves in both the first and third extra sessions.

This was a close game the entire way with neither team leading by more than three goals. The Hawks jumped to 3-0 lead 6:13 into the contest before the Golden Bears tallied three straight times in a 2:47 stretch late in the half for a 7-7 tie at intermission.

RWU led by two goals with 8:38 remaining before Fenton scored three consecutive goals for a 14-13 advantage with 5:38 left. Freshman Jessie Alden (Falmouth, MA) sent the contest into overtime by scoring with 1:23 remaining.

The first overtime in women's lacrosse consists of two three-minute periods. In the first session Sylvia made a key stop with 26 seconds left while senior Lauren Archambault (Westfield, MA) made a nice defensive play to thwart a Hawks' scoring attempt in the second period. Both teams then missed scoring opportunities in the final minute. Alden hit the left pipe with 42 seconds left and Golden Bears' sophomore Michelle DeBellis (Wantagh, NY) also hit the left pipe with 14 seconds remaining. The second overtime period also consists of a pair of three-minute overtime periods with sudden victory for the first goal.

Roger Williams (4-3) had eight players score goals with junior Kara Smolca (Gaithersburg, MD) leading the way with three goals and a pair of assists. Sophomore Jacqueline Criss (Westwood, MA) netted a goal with an assist. Alden finished with two goals as did junior Lindsay Clarken (North Caldwell, NJ) and freshman Natasha Billie (Point Pleasant, NJ).
