Strong start leads Mount Holyoke past Western New England College

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Mount Holyoke scored the first three goals of the game and never looked back in posting a 6-1 decision over visiting Western New England College in a non-league field hockey game Thursday afternoon (Sept. 20).

Senior Claire Emery (Blue Bell, PA) tallied a hat trick in the opening half (the first goal coming 6:19 into the game) to give the Lyons a comfortable margin.

The Golden Bears got on the board when freshman Kaela Jalbert (Turner, ME) scored her first collegiate goal with an assist from junior Caitlin Gelber (Centereach, NY) with 5:16 remaining in the first half.

MHC added three goals in the second stanza, including a pair by junior Jaimie Macari (Fiskdale, MA), to improve its record to 3-1. Junior goalie Allie Walsh (Ann Arbor, MI) finished with seven saves.

Freshman goalkeeper Katherine Masterjohn (Warren, MA) compiled 11 saves in her collegiate debut for Western New England College who fell to 0-7.
