Western New England College opens home season with solid win over Wentworth

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Western New England College women's soccer team opened its home season with a solid 2-0 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) match Thursday afternoon (Sept. 20) at Suprenant Field.

It was the fourth consecutive win for the Golden Bears who raised their record to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

Junior Shivaun Wheeler (Southington, CT) opened the scoring with her second goal of the season only 8:10 into the contest with an assist from freshman Heather Mortell (Webster, MA). Mortell added an insurance goal with her team high sixth of the season in the 78th minute.

The Golden Bears, who played their first seven games on the road, out-shot the Leopards by a 14-4 margin and enjoyed a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.

Senior goalkeeper Allison Wellman (Chelmsford, MA) made seven saves for WIT while sophomore Jess Covino (Bristol, CT) stopped three shots for WNEC.

Wentworth falls to 1-5-1 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
