Western New England College finds going tough in loss to Curry

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore running back Jamaal Woods (Malden, MA) ran for three touchdowns and junior quarterback Ryan Van De Giesen (North Attleboro, MA) passed for two other scores as unbeaten Curry College rolled to an easy 48-3 victory over host Western New England College in the New England Football Conference (NEFC) Boyd Division opener for both teams Saturday (Sept. 22).

Woods (17 carries, game high 83 yards) scored on runs of 4 and 11 yards in the opening quarter to give the Colonels a 14-0 lead. Nice punt returns by juniors Michael Looney (North Easton, MA) (23 yards) and Tim Bloniasz (Leicester, MA) (67 yards) set-up those touchdowns.

Curry (4-0) broke the game open with 17 points in the second period on a 26-yard pass from Van De Giesen to junior receiver Brian Taylor (North Chelmsford, MA) (3 catches, 74 yards), a four-yard run by woods, and 32-yard field goal by senior David Vincent (Grafton, MA).

Western New England College (2-2) tallied its only points on a 24-yard field goal by junior James Farrell (East Longmeadow, MA) with 5:45 left in the second stanza.

Sophomore Scott Driscoll (North Andover, MA) had a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown while Van De Giesen (8-for-14, 147 yards) connected with senior Felix Borukhov (Newton, MA) on a 20-yard score to give the visitors a 45-3 lead after three quarters. Vincent added a 27-yard field goal in the final period to complete the scoring.

Curry compiled 388 yards, including 230 on the ground as junior Steve DiFabio (Salem, NH) contributed 75 yards on 14 attempts. The Colonels' defense did its part by picking-off five passes, including one by Bloniasz. Senior linebacker Michael Forbes (East Boston, MA) had a team high nine tackles.

Western New England College finished with 298 yards, but sophomore quarterback Justin Walz (Groton, CT) had a tough afternoon completing only 20-of-46 passes for 201 yards with three interceptions. Sophomore receiver Rob Chiacco (Groton, CT) had a game high nine receptions for 119 yards, including catches of 42 and 30 yards on the same drive that led to the Golden Bears' field goal. Walz and Chiacco also were teammates at Robert E. Fitch High School in Groton, Connecticut. Freshman Jake Field (Long Valley, NJ) averaged 41.8 yards for five punts with a season long of 55 twice.
