SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior Ross Pemmerl (Rehoboth, MA) scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 30th minute as visiting Wesleyan University posted a 2-1 victory over Western New England College in a non-conference men's soccer match Sunday (Sept. 23) at Suprenant Field.
It was the first goal of the season for Pemmerl and the first win for the Cardinals who now have a 1-4 record.
Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when sophomore Keisuke Yamashita (Yokohama, Japan) tallied his second goal of the fall with an assist from junior Ozzie Parente (Orange, CT).
The Golden Bears (6-2-2) avoided the shutout when sophomore Nick Zarka (Farmington, CT) netted his second goal of the year with 54 seconds remaining in the match. Junior Dale Totman (Conway, MA) earned the assist.
Senior goalkeeper Matt Gnall (Morristown, NJ) compiled three saves for Wesleyan. WNEC used two goalkeepers with senior Steve Hennessey (Essex Junction, VT) making one save and sophomore Kyle Bak (Cumberland, RI) stopping two shots.
