SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior co-captain Cori Eggert (Denville, NJ) had a goal and assist as the Western New England College field hockey team won its first game of the season with a 3-2 win over visiting Endicott College Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 26).
The Golden Bears, who had scored only five goals entering the contest, now have a 1-8 record and 1-1 mark in The Commonwealth Coast Conference.
Sophomore Justine McComb (Newington, CT) gave Western New England College a 1-0 lead with a goal only 6:11 into the opening half with an assist from Eggert.
Endicott (4-2, 0-2 TCCC) tied the game when junior Jennifer Beech (Devonshire, Bermuda) fired home a goal on a penalty corner shot at the 15:49 mark. WNEC took a 2-1 lead into half-time following a goal by freshman Kaela Jalbert (Turner, ME) with 12:11 left in the first stanza.
Eggert gave the Golden Bears a two-goal cushion when she tallied a goal just 1:11 into the second stanza.
Beech completed the scoring by firing home a shot on a penalty corner with no time remaining on the clock. Junior Michelle Berard (Ashland, MA) gained credit for the assist.
Endicott had several scoring opportunities, but senior goalie Emilie Donka (White River Junction, VT) came up big by compiling 12 saves for the hosts. Junior Chelsea DeFeo (York, ME) stopped three shots for the Gulls.
