Big effort by Kyle Fredette leads Western New England College over Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. – Junior forward Kyle Fredette (Wallingford, VT) totaled 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season as the visiting Western New England College men's basketball team posted a 71-58 victory over Salve Regina University Saturday (Jan. 26) in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) action.

WNEC (10-7, 4-2 TCCC) followed up its worst performance of the season (an 82-56 home loss to Wentworth on Wednesday) with one of best efforts of the year.

Fredette had scored only 20 points in his last four outings, but took charge early with 11 points and six boards as the Golden Bears raced to a 31-20 lead at halftime.

Senior guard Ryan Hernandez (Hampton Bays, NY) had a big game off the bench with 15 points, which included three three-pointers. He has made a three-pointer in 68 of his last 71 contests.

Junior forward Jim Bayne (Bristol, CT) also had a double-double with 14 points and a game high 15 rebounds after scoring only six points with two rebounds against Wentworth.

Freshman forward Brad Thomka (Springfield, MA) was the fourth WNEC player in double figures with 13 points. He was 4-for-5 from the field and made all five charity shots.

Senior point guard Asif Abdul-Wadud (Springfield, MA) scored only two points, but dished out six assists with three rebounds, and a pair of steals.

WNEC finished shooting 48.1% from the field (its second best performance of the season) and took a 42-32 margin in rebounding.

This was the first conference road game for Western New England College  who was playing only its second away contest since December 4.

Freshman guard Windell Hinkson (Groton, CT) led four SRU players in double figures with 13 points.

The Seahawks fall to 5-12 overall and 3-3 in TCCC.
