Box Score DANBURY, Conn. - Western Connecticut broke open a close game with three goals in the second half for a 4-0 victory over visiting Western New England College in a non-league women's soccer match Thursday night (Oct. 23) at the Westside Athletic Complex.
Sophomore Lauren Matthews (Monroe, CT) did most of the damage by scoring two goals in a 14:46 stretch in the 57th and 71st minutes, respectively. She leads the Colonials with 12 goals.
WCSU (11-3-1) took a 1-0 lead on a goal when junior Kelli Veras (Trumbull, CT) hit the back of the net only 2:56 into the contest.
Freshman Lauren Francisco (Ludlow, MA) rounded out the scoring in the 82nd minute. Senior goalkeeper Shannon Cawley (Willimantic, CT) made one save
Western New England College junior keeper Jessica Covino (Bristol, CT) stopped 12 shots.
Western Connecticut held a commanding 29-3 advantage in shots and 8-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Golden Bears (6-11) also had their three-game win streak ended.
