Box Score BOSTON, Mass. - After a slow start, the Western New England College women's soccer team ended its season on a high note with a 2-0 victory over host Wentworth Institute of Technology Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 29) to secure a spot in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) playoffs.
The Golden Bears improved their record to 8-11 overall and 7-6 in the conference. WNEC won its last five league contests by shutouts.
Senior Shivaun Wheeler (Southington, CT) gave the Blue and Gold a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute with an assist from junior Angela Zguro (East Longmeadow, MA).
It was the first goal of the season for Wheeler and the first point of the year for Zguro who missed several matches with an injury.
Western New England College added an insurance goal when freshman Andrea Almeida (Newington, CT) netted her second goal of the campaign in the 76th minute with an assist from sophomore Heather Mortell (Webster, MA).
Junior goalkeeper Jessica Covino (Bristol, CT) made five saves for her fifth shutout of the fall.
WNEC had a 15-10 advantage in shots.
Freshman keeper Katherine Matthews (Northborough, MA) also stopped five shots for the Leopards (6-12, 5-8 TCCC) who missed qualifying for the playoffs.
Western New England College opened the season with three straight losses, but became one of the top teams in the league down the stretch winning four of its final contests.
Coach Ron Dias' team earned the seventh seed in the tournament and will meet second-seed Roger Williams at 2:00 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 1) in Bristol, Rhode Island in a quarterfinal match.
