Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior goalkeeper Abby Ytzen (Des Moines, IA) registered four saves for her third shutout of the season as the Gordon women's soccer team blanked Western New England College 1-0 on Saturday (Oct. 4) at Suprenant Field.
The win gives the Fighting Scots a 3-5-1 overall record and 3-2 mark in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) while the Golden Bears drop to 3-8 and 2-4 in the conference.
There wasn't much action in the first half as WNEC had only four shots on goal to Gordon's two in a tightly defensive match up.
Gordon finally broke through in the second stanza as freshman defender Erin Strom (Wheaton, IL) launched a direct kick to junior midfielder Christin Peters (Feeding Hills, MA) who tallied what proved to be the game-winner in the 61st minute.
Western New England College came close to tying the match with 30 seconds remaining on back-to-back corner kicks, but weren't able to shoot the ball past a swarm of Fighting Scots defenders who kicked it out of their zone.
The Golden Bears out- shot Gordon 10-8.
Junior goalkeeper Jessica Covino (Bristol, CT) finished with four saves.
WNEC begins a four-game road trip at Colby-Sawyer on Tuesday (Oct. 7) while Gordon hosts Endicott.
