SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England College softball team reached a major milestone after defeating visiting Curry by the scores of 5-2 and 7-5 Friday afternoon (Apr. 25) in a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader.
The wins gave the Golden Bears' 600 all-time victories in their 30-year history. WNEC is now 600-337-1 for a 64.0 winningpercentage.
Junior Laura Bower (Hudson, MA) was the winning pitcher in the opener moving her record to 15-6. She also gained her first save of the season in the second contest.
Freshman first base player Trish Breault (Millville, MA) went 4-for-4 with a key two-run double (her third of the game) in the fifth inning that gave the Golden Bears a 5-1 lead.
The Colonels rallied in the seventh scoring a run before Bowers got the final out with the bases loaded. She allowed six hits and one earned run with eight strikeouts and four walks.
Juniorleft-fielder Lauren Arsenault (Fitchburg, MA) had a pair of singles with two runs and a RBI. She also stole home after Breault stole second in the second inning.
Junior shortstop Brittany DeGennaro (Orange, CT) returned to action after missing four games with an injury and had a single along with a RBI groundout.
DeGennaro (4-2) then pitched the second contest and received the winwith help from Bower who fired a scoreless seventh.
Arsenault tacked on two more hits with a run while freshman designated player Angela Monaco (Monroe, CT) had a pair of doubles and two RBI.
Junior centerfielder Brenna Fitzgerald (Manchester, NH) also contributed two hits and scored a run. Senior catcher Allison Glassick (Newport, RI) contributed a two-run double in a four-run first inning that helped tied the score.
Coach Lori Mayhew's team is now 24-12 overall and 16-6 in the conference.
Western New England College completes its regular season with a conference doubleheader at New England College Saturday afternoon (Apr. 26).
Freshman pitcher Amanda Peters (East Bridgewater, MA) belted a solo homer in the fifth inning of the second contest for the visitors. Junior shortstop Kristen Jackman (Stoughton, MA) had three hits and scored a pair of runs in the twinbill.
Curry has a 24-16 record with a 16-8 league mark.
