BWestern New England College holds off Colby-Sawyer in TCCC Tournament contest

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior Lindsey Fenton (Pelham, MA) scored five goals with two assists to lead the third-seeded Western New England College women's lacrosse team to a 17-14 victory over sixth-seeded Colby-Sawyer in a quarterfinal round game of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Tuesday  (Apr. 29).

The Golden Bears advance to the semifinals of the conference tournament at second-seeded Roger Williams on Thursday (May 1). The Hawks posted a 12-10 win over seventh-seeded University of New England.

WNEC (14-4) received big boosts from senior Kayte Devine (New Fairfield, CT) who netted four goals with an assist and sophomore Rosalie Rodriguez (Norwalk, CT) who added three goals with a pair of assists. Senior Kaitlin Zangle (Wingdale, NY) had a four-point performance with two goals and two assists.

Freshman goalie Marissa Bonitatibus (Yorktown Heights, NY) compiled 11 saves for the Golden Bears.

The teams combined for 31 goals for the second straight time after the Golden Bears posted a 20-11 victory over the Chargers in their regular season finale last Tuesday.

The contest was a lot closer this time after Colby-Sawyer rallied from a 9-4 half-time deficit scoring four consecutive goals to get within 13-12 on a shot by sophomore Elaina Kennedy (Sunderland, MA) with 8:41 remaining in the game.

Western New England College answered with two straight goals by Rodriguez and Fenton in a 23-second span with just over six minutes remaining. The Chargers got within two at 16-14 when senior Lisa Giordano (Londonderry, NH) scored with 2:59 left before Devine fired in the final goal at the 1:49 mark.

Kennedy and senior Tara Stewart (Londonderry, NH) each finished with three goals and an assist while junior Allicia Murphy (North Bennington, VT) contributed two goals and three assists. Giordano chipped-in with two goals and an assist.

Sophomore goalie Alicia Foss (Hardwick, VT) kept the Chargers in the game by making 17 saves, including several key stops in the second half.

Colby-Sawyer ends its season with a 6-10 record.
