SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Senior Katye Devine (New Fairfield, CT) scored five goals and classmate Kaitlin Zangle (Wingdale, NY) added four goals and an assist to lead the Western New England College women's lacrosse team to a 16-10 victory over visiting Curry Saturday afternoon (Apr. 5) in a battle of two of the top squads in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC).
Both teams entered the contest tied for third in the conference with identical 3-1 marks. The Golden Bears are now 8-3 overall (4-1 TCCC) while the Colonels drop to 8-3 (3-2 in the league).
Sophomore Rosalie Rodriguez (Norwalk, CT) contributed two goals and two assists while freshman Jeanmarie Barbato (Huntington Station, NY) netted two goals with an assist.
There were four ties in the opening half before Curry took an 8-5 lead with 7:47 left before half-time. Junior Lindsey Fenton (Pelham, MA) and Devine scored in a 14-second span just under the three-minute mark as the Golden Bears cut the margin to one at the break.
Western New England College opened the second half with a 4-1 run to take an 11-9 advantage at the 16:43 mark. Curry pulled within one on a goal by senior Meghan Tilley (Milton, MA) with 8:53 left in the game, but the Golden Bears' defense didn't allow a goal the rest of the way.
WNEC tallied the final five goals with Fenton, Zangle, Rodriguez, Devine, and junior Michelle Thompson (Wilbrham, MA) hitting the back of the net down the stretch.
Freshman goalie Marissa Bonitatibus (Yorktown Heights, NY) also did her part by compiling 15 saves. Freshman Nicole Poli (Medfield, MA) had six caused turnovers and four ground balls. Rodriguez also came up with six draw controls.
Curry received three goals from sophomore Ashley Hansbury (Chelmsford, MA) while junior Kerri Shaw (Arlington, MA) stopped 11 shots.
