Western New England College falls in overtime to Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Junior Amanda Burns (Hillsdale, NY) scored with 6:19 left in overtime to lift the Westfield State field hockey team to a dramatic 2-1 victory over Western New England College in non-conference action Thursday evening (Sept. 18).

The Owls improved to 4-1 with their fourth straight victory. WNEC remains winless at 0-6.

Western New England College sent the game into overtime when senior Caitlin Gelber (Centereach, NY) scored with 24 seconds remaining in regulation. Gelber one-timed a shot inside the left post after receiving a nice cross from sophomore Katy Vogl (Cazenovia, NY).

Burns netted her game-winning goal on a shot into the top left corner. Sophomore Kasey Bascetta (Granby, CT) gained the assist.

Westfield State scored with 3:02 left in the first half on a goal by junior transfer Ashley Wojnarowski (South Hadley, MA) with an assist from junior Kate Moss (Auburn, MA).

WNEC freshman goalie Lindsay Orszulak (Longmeadow, MA) finished with six saves while freshman Amanda McCarthy (Franklin, MA) stopped four shots for the Owls.
