Football Conference (NEFC) Boyd Division opener for both schools Saturday afternoon (Sept. 27) at the Walter M. Katz Field.
This was the 34th straight victory for the Colonels against NEFC rivals and their 32nd consecutive victory at home.
The Golden Bears (0-4) fumbled the game's opening kickoff, and three plays later, Van De Giesen tossed a 16-yard scoring pass to junior wide receiver Jon Rodriguez (Leominster, MA) just 1:14 into the contest.
Western New England College tied the score with 2:07 remaining in the first period, collecting what proved to be its only points on the day, when junior quarterback Justin Walz (Groton, CT) connected with sophomore wide receiver Jake Field (Bedminster, NJ) on a 55-yard scoring strike.
This was the longest play of the game and the first college touchdown for Field who finished the day with four receptions for 74 yards.
Curry (4-0) then tallied 33 unanswered points, including a pair of second-quarter touchdowns that gave the hosts a 20-7 advantage at the break.
Junior running back Jamaal Woods (Malden, MA) ran two yards for a score at the 12:43 mark followed by a key 20-yard interception return by sophomore defensive end Jason Madden (Sharon, MA) just 38 seconds before half-time.
Van De Giesen (12-for-19, 155 yards) then fired a pair of touchdown passes in the third quarter to freshman receiver Norman Landry (Blackstone, MA) (29 yards) and junior fullback John Sughrue (Fremont, NH) (25 yards).
The Colonels added a three-yard scoring run by Van De Giesen early in the fourth period to for the final points of the contest.
The Colonels' defense held the Golden Bears to 219 yards, including only eight net rushing, and forced five turnovers.
Curry totaled 346 total yards, including a team high 47 rushing by Van De Giesen.
Walz completed 17-for-35 passes for 177 yards, but suffered three interceptions and two sacks.
Freshman defensive back Casey Dunne (Milford, CT) had eight tackles and two interceptions for the Golden Bears. Sophomore strong safety Joe Begnal (Waterbury, CT) also had eight stops.
Curry junior linebackers Scott Driscoll (North Andover, MA) (10 tackles) and Daniel Dawson (Stoneham, MA) (7 tackles, 2 sacks) also played well.
