Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Freshman Cathy Regan (Monroe, CT) scored the first goals of her college career and sophomore Shannon Pescatello (Wethersfield, CT) added a goal and two assists to lead the Western New England College women's soccer team to a 7-1 shutout victory over visiting Eastern Nazarene Saturday afternoon (Sept. 27) at Suprenant Field.
WNEC, which has won two of its last three outings, is now 3-6 overall and 2-2 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC). This was the highest scoring output of the season for the Golden Bears who had netted only six goals in eight previous matches.
Freshman Mallorie Nai (West Suffield, CT) gave the hosts an early lead with her first college goal just 4:42 into the game. Sophomore Heather Mortell (Webster, MA) fired home her team high fifth goal of the season at the 16:25 mark before Regan tallied her first goal in the 43rd minute to give the hosts a comfortable 3-0 advantage at halftime.
The Crusaders (2-7, 0-4 TCCC) got on the board when junior Brenna Mereness (Castleton, NY) scored her fifth goal of the year at 50:40.
Pescatello answered with her first goal of the season just 18 seconds later and Regan contributed her final score in the 76th minute.
Freshmen Jacqueline Dawson (Maynard, MA) and Andrea Almeida (Newington, CT) both notched their first college goals in the 83rd and 88th minutes, respectively, to close out the scoring. Almeida also had an assist along with freshman Samantha Lewis (Mystic, CT).
Senior Shivaun Wheeler (Southington, CT) and freshman Krista Gangloff (Newington, CT) each earned two assists.
Sophomore goalkeeper Marti Blum (Huntington Valley, PA) stopped four shots to even her record at 2-2.
Mereness started in the net for ENC allowing two goals with five saves in 20 minutes, 42 seconds. Junor Brook Hale (Bangor, ME) compiled 13 saves in relief.
Western New England College out-shot Eastern Nazarene by a 39-12 margin.
