Second half rally falls short as Western New England College bows to Salve Regina

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Five players scored in double figures as the Salve Regina men's basketball team posted a 75-60 victory over Western New England College Saturday afternoon (Jan. 24) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Sophomore forward Dan Royce (Mahwah, NJ) led the balanced attack with a double-double of 23 points and 12 rebounds (both game highs). The rugged 6'5” Royce made 9-of-15 shots from the field to go along with two assists and a block.

The Seahawks, who won for the fifth time in their last six outings, even their record at 8-8 overall and improve to 4-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC).

Salve Regina held a two-point margin at intermission (36-34) and opened the second half with a 16-2 run for a commanding 52-36 advantage following a three-pointer by senior guard Justin Woodworth (Ipswich, MA) with 14:22 left in the game.

The Golden Bears followed with a 14-6 run to trim the lead to eight (58-50) when sophomore forward Brad Thomka (Springfield, MA) netted a basket at the 9:23 mark, but couldn't get any closer down the stretch.

Woodworth finished with 12 points while freshman forward Michael Dylag (Southbury, CT) added 11 points (4-of-6 from the floor, including 3-for-3 in three-pointers) off the bench.

The backcourt duo of senior Jabreche Boyd (West Haven, CT) and sophomore Windell Hinkson (Groton, CT) each contributed 10 points. Sophomore guard Ryan Birrell (Hope, RI) scored only seven points, but collected seven rebounds with six assists, and a pair of steals.

Western New England College (4-11, 2-3 TCCC) received a fine performance from junior forward Brendan Murphy (West Springfield, MA) who scored 17 points in a reserve role. He made 6-of-9 field goal attempts, including 5-of-7 three-pointers.

Senior guard Matt Maynard (Paterson, NJ) chipped-in with 16 points while senior forward Kyle Fredette (Wallingford, VT) pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked two shots. Thomka (Springfield, MA) finished with nine points, four rebounds, and three assists.
