Nichols holds off upset-minded Western New England College in TCCC action

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior guard MaryLynn Skarzenski (Woodbridge, NJ) had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds as the Nichols women's basketball team ran its winning streak to 15 games with a 62-56 victory over Western New England College Thursday (Jan. 29) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

The Bison, who haven't lost since November 21, raised their overall record to 16-2 and remained unbeaten in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) with a 6-0 mark.

Sophomore guard Ashley Robidoux (Milford, MA) netted 13 points while junior forward Margaret Lilly (Ashfield, MA) contributed 10 points and eight rebounds for the visitors.

Nichols held a 30-24 lead at intermission before the Golden Bears started chipping away getting to two points twice and finally within one at 45-44 following a basket by junior guard Kailah Al-Darraji (Dover, NH) with 7:18 left in the game.

The Bison connected on three three-pointers over the next four minutes, the last by Lilly, which upped the margin to 54-48 at the 4:37 mark.

Western New England College (7-10, 3-3 TCCC) got within four at 54-50 after a basket by sophomore guard Taryn Belowsky (New Haven, CT), but Nichols held off the upset bid.

The Golden Bears had four players in double figures led by sophomore forward Kelly McCormick (Manchester, CT) who scored 12 points in her first start of the season.

Al-Darraji, Belowsky, and freshman forward Sarah Proper (Coxsackie, NY) each added 10 points. Al-Darraji and Proper each pulled down seven rebounds.

Sophomore forward Jessica Nelson (North Providence, RI) had seven points and a game high 12 rebounds for Nichols.

Skarzenski also dished out four assists and had three steals in another fine performance.

The Bison didn't have its best shooting night making only 34.4% of its field goal attempts and 48.1% of its foul shots, but came with the clutch shots when needed.

Western New England College finished shooting 42.6% for the field and 66.7% from the charity stripe.

Each team finished with 42 rebounds in the hard-fought conference battle.
