BRISTOL, Conn. - Sixth-seeded Western New England College upset third-seeded Roger Williams on penalty kicks Saturday (Oct. 31 )in a quarterfinal round match of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Women's Soccer Tournament Saturday (Oct. 31) at Bayside Field.

The teams battled to a 2-2 double overtime draw before the Golden Bears took a 4-3 advantage in the penalty kick shootout.

Senior Kristen Culver (Westhampton, MA) ended the long match with her free kick after the Hawks missed two of their shots thanks to terrific saves by senior goalkeeper Jessica Covino (Bristol, CT).

RWU led 1-0 at halftime after sophomore Devon Leighton (Scarborough, ME) scored just 1:13 before the break with an assist from classmate  Alexa Maher (Hopewell, NJ).

Western New England College tied the contest in the 69th minute on a shot by sophomore Andrea Almeida (Newington, CT) with an assist from junior Shannon Pescatello (Wethersfield, CT).

Junior Heather Mortell (Webster, MA) put the Golden Bears ahead for the first time in the 78th minute as sophomore Morgan Vogt (Henniker, NH) gained the assist.

This time the Hawks rallied to send the match into extra sessions when sophomore Laurin Pendleton (Southwick, MA)  tallied the equalizer with 1:44 remaining in regulation. Senior Carey Baldwin (West Hartford, CT) had the assist.

Covino finished with six saves for the Golden Bears while Jen Garside (Londonderry, NH) turned away five shots for the hosts.

This was the second tie between the squads this season following a 1-1 draw on October 17 in Springfield.

Western New England College will host seventh-seeded Wentworth (a 2-1 winner over second-seeded University of New England) in a semifinal meeting at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 4) at Suprenant Field.
