Andrea Almeida (Newington, CT) tallied a goal in the second stanza as sixth-seeded Western New England College defeated seventh-seeded Wentworth 2-0 in a semifinal round match of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Women's Soccer Tournament Wednesday (Nov. 4) at Suprenant Field.
Western New England College (10-8-2) will visit top-seeded Endicott in the championship match at 1:00 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 7) with the winner advancing to the NCAA Division III Championship. The Gulls downed fourth-seeded Gordon 1-0 for the second straight year in a semifinal contest.
Wentworth (9-11) had an opportunity to take a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute as senior goalkeeper
Jessica Covino (Bristol, CT) came out of the box, but sophomore midfielder
Samantha Lewis (Mystic, CT) came out of nowhere to kick the ball bounds just before it crossed the goal line.
The Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute when junior forward
Heather Mortell (Webster, MA) executed a perfect cross from the left side and found Vogt in the corner for the score.
Mortell also assisted on the final goal in the 55th minute as she passed the ball to Almeida who fired home a shot from 30 yards out.
Western New England College out shot Wentworth 18-8 and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Covino finished with three saves while sophomore goalie
Katherine Matthews (Northborough, MA) had seven stops for the Leopards.
