Late comeback lifts Western New England College past UNE in conference battle

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Seniors Lindsay Fenton (Pelham, MA) and Michelle Thompson (Wilbraham, MA) combined for 10 points as the Western New England College women's lacrosse team rallied for a thrilling 12-10 victory over visiting University of New England Saturday (April 10).

The Golden Bears, who edged New England College 15-14 on Wednesday, improved their record to 6-5 and 4-2 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC).

Fenton finished with five goals and an assist while Thompson contributed three goals and an assist.

Trailing 10-8 with 16:35 remaining in the game, Fenton fired home a pair of shots that tied the contest at the 9:20 mark. Thompson then netted the game-winner and insurance goal in the final six minutes.

Freshman Katie Toomy (Northborough, MA) scored twice within eight seconds with a little more than four minutes remaining in the first half as the Golden Bears took an 8-6 advantage at the break. She also had an assist in the game.

Sophomore Nicole Poli (Medfield, MA) contributed a goal along with seven caused turnovers and six ground balls. She forced a key turnover deep in Golden Bears' territory with 1:20 left that helped seal the victory.

Sophomore goalie Marissa Bonitatibus (Yorktown Heights, NY) had eight of her 13 saves in the second half. Sophomore Jeanmarie Barbato (Huntington Station, NY) had the other goal.

For the Nor'easters, sophomore Kate McCarter (Bellingham, MA) tallied five goals, including two straight that gave the visitors the 10-8 advantage in the second half.

Senior Amanda Barker (Gloucester, MA) and sophomore Danielle Cate (Boscawen, NH) both had two goals while junior Ginny Lee (York, ME) scored once. Sophomore goalie Tara Geraghty (Barrington, RI) stopped 14 shots.

The University of New England falls to 3-8 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
