BOSTON, Mass. - The Western New England College softball team blasted out 22 hits in posting an 8-0, 9-1 doubleheader sweep over host Wentworth Institute of Technology Wednesday afternoon at the Carr Diamond.
Both games were called after six innings because of the mercy rule.
The Golden Bears improved their record to 17-7 overall and 9-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC).
In the opener, WNEC collected 13 hits with sophomore first base player Trish Breault (Millville, MA) going 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a run scored, and two runs-batted-in.
Sophomore leftfielder Mallory Householder (Ellington, CT) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored.
Senior pitcher Laura Bowers (Hudson, MA) allowed only one hit with five strikeouts and a walk in five innings in raising her record to 6-4. Freshman Alyssa Obin (Plymouth, MA) pitched the last inning allowing only a walk.
In the second contest, freshman designated hitter Rachel Wyrwa (Methuen, MA) had two singles and four RBI.
Senior shortstop Brittany DeGennaro (Orange, CT) had a single, double, and scored three runs.
Freshman catcher Sara Barnes (Berkley, MA) added a pair of hits, scored once, and knocked in a run.
Freshman Sarah Lempicki (Southington, CT) and junior Vic Lospinuso (West Islip, NY) each pitched three innings with Lospinuso (6-2) getting the win.
Junior rightfielder Christina Farese (Marlborough, MA) and junior second base player Kate Post (Bridgewater, MA) each had hits in both contests.
For Wentworth, junior first base player Caylee Johanson (Windsor, CT) had a hit in each game.
Sophomore Bridget Souza (Medford, MA) had two hits and scored a run in the nightcap for the Leopards (8-18, 6-12 TCCC).
