Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior Lindsey Fenton (Pelham, MA) registered four goals and three assists as the Western New England College women's lacrosse team held on to beat New England College, 15-14, on Wednesday (April 8) in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) action.
The Golden Bears, who bounced back from a one-goal loss against league leader Endicott (16-15) last Saturday, held at five-goal lead (15-10) when Fenton scored on a free position shot with 3:14 remaining in the game.
The Pilgrims battled back scoring four times in the final 1:56, including two by senior Emily Tanguay (Manchester, NH) who finished with a game-high six goals. She also compiled six draw controls.
Sophomore Jeanmarie Barbato (Huntington Station, NY) tallied two of her three goals in the first half to give WNEC a five-goal advantage (7-2) at the 12:52 mark.
The Golden Bears led 8-5 at halftime and again at 12-9 following another free position goal by Fenton with 14:35 remaining in the contest.
Senior Casey McFarland (Webster, NH) pulled New England College within two with 11:17 left before the Golden Bears tallied three straight times, which was enough to hold off a gallant Pilgrims' comeback.
McFarland and senior Brandi Vittum (Woodstock, VT) each finished with three goals and an assist. Junior goalie Alexandra DiRico (Limerick, PA) made 17 saves in a nice effort for the Pilgrims.
Senior Cougar Moynihan (South Glastonbury, CT) had two goals and two assists for the Golden Bears while freshman Katie Toomy (Northborough, MA) contributed three goals.
On defense, sophomore Nicole Poli (Medfield, MA) led the way with eight ground balls and five caused turnovers. Sophomore attacker Marisa Hebert (Saco, ME) had 14 of the team's 18 draw controls.
Sophomore goalie Marissa Bonitatibus (Yorktown Heights, NY) stopped nine shots.
New England College falls to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference after having its four-game win streak ended.
Western New England College returns to the .500 mark at 5-5 and is now 3-2 in the league.
