Western New England College cruises to fifth straight win in conference play

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.
- The Western New England College women's soccer team cruised to a 6-0 win over Eastern Nazarene for its fifth straight victory in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) action on Tuesday (Oct. 5) afternoon.

WNEC has won seven of its last eight contests and is now 8-4 overall with a 6-1 TCCC mark. The Lions fall to 2-7-2 and 0-6-1 in TCCC.

The Golden Bears used a balanced scoring attack as six different players found the back of the net.

Senior forward Heather Mortell (Webster, MA) opened the scoring in the 28th minute with an assist from junior forward Sara McMurray (Enfield, CT).  Mortell now leads the Golden Bears with six goals on the year.

Junior midfielder Andrea Almeida (Newington, CT) scored just three minutes later for her first goal of the year, assisted by junior midfielder Morgan Vogt (Henniker, NH).

Western New England College would take a 3-0 lead into the break, as sophomore defender Kelci Keene (Attleboro, MA) connected on her second goal of the year in the 40th minute.

McMurray scored at 52:38 on an assist from freshman forward Nina Vital (Ludlow, MA) for her fifth goal on the campaign.

Junior midfielder Krista Gangloff (Newington, CT) notched the Golden Bear's fifth goal in the 58th minute for her second score on the year.

Sophomore midfielder Maureen Riley (Chicopee, MA) scored in the 76th minute on an assist from junior midfielder Mallorie Nai (West Suffield, CT) to close out the scoring.

Freshman goalkeeper Kayla Prout (Holyoke, MA) made a pair of saves, including a diving stop to her right on a penalty kick by Eastern Nazarene sophomore midfielder Morgan Goodney (East Greenwich, RI) in the second half.

Senior goalkeeper Victoria Sontag (Mount Vernon, NH) made 10 stops for the Lions.

Western New England College returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 9) at 12:30 p.m. with a conference match at Colby-Sawyer.
