Springfield downs Western New England College in battle of city rivals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Junior Meagan Dobson (Longmeadow, MA) led a balanced scoring attack with three goals and two assists as the Springfield women's lacrosse team opened its season with a 13-6 victory over Western New England College in a non-league contest Thursday afternoon (March 4).

It also was a successful debut for rookie Pride coach Kristen Mullady who graduated from the school in 2000.

Western New England College (0-2) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by senior Lindsey Fenton (Pelham, MA) just 2:13 into the contest.

Springfield graduate student Erin Doolan (Blauvelt, NY) tied the contest at the 25:40 mark before the Golden Bears took their final lead at 2-1 when sophomore Katie Toomy (Northborough, MA) scored with 24:17 left before the break.

The Pride then tallied seven unanswered goals, including two by Dobson, to take an 8-2 lead at halftime.

Freshman Megan Doyle (Putnam Valley, NY) netted her first two collegiate goals to get WNEC within 9-4 with 16:47 remaining, but goals by senior Jenn Zubkus (Dover, NH) and Dobson broke the contest open.

Doolan and junior Nicole Soucie (Southington, CT) each finished with two goals and two assists for the visitors. Freshman Allie Davis (Fairfield, CT) added a pair of goals and an assist while freshman Meghan Flanagan (Averill Park, NY) had a successful college debut with two goals.

Juniors Megan O'Brien (Winthrop, MA) had a game-high four ground balls for Springfield while classmate Rebecca DiSisto (Yorktown Heights, NY) had four caused turnovers.

Fenton had two goals and an assist while Toomy also scored twice for the Golden Bears. Sophomore Liz McRoberts (Bourne, MA) picked-up three ground balls while junior Nicole Poli (Medfield, MA) had four caused turnovers.

SC senior goalie Lauren McAulay (Yorktown, NY) compiled 12 saves in a solid performance. Junior Marissa Bonitatibus (Yorktown Heights, NY) stopped 10 shots for Western New England College.
