BIDDEFORD, Maine - A gallant comeback fell just short as the Western New England College women's lacrosse team suffered a 12-11 loss to the University of New England Saturday afternoon (Apr. 10).
The Golden Bears drop under the .500 mark at 5-6 and are now 3-2 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC). The Nor'easters are enjoying a fine season with an 8-2 record, which includes 6-1 ledger in the conference.
Senior midfielder
Lindsey Fenton (Pelham, MA) led WNEC with four goals and two assists. Freshman midfielder
Megan Doyle (Putnam Valley, NY) added three goals and an assist.
Junior attackers
Nicole Squadrito (Ellington, CT) (2 goals, 1 assist) and
Marisa Hebert (Saco, ME) (1 goal, 2 assists) each had three-point performances. Hebert also recorded 12 draw controls.
Senior midfielder
Mallory Long (Lewiston, ME) and junior midfielder
Danielle Cate (Boscawen, NJ) both netted three goals with an assist for UNE while sophomore attacker
Jenna Barton (Wolfeboro, NH) added two goals and two assists.
WNEC jumped to a quick 4-1 lead thanks to a pair of goals by Fenton less than seven minutes into the game.
The Nor'easters roared back scoring the last six goals of the half for a -4 advantage and the first three goals of the third quarter for a 10-4 lead with 25:54 left in the game.
Western New England College rallied with five consecutive goals, the last two by Fenton, to pull within 10-9 at the 16:59 mark. Cate put two shots in the net to give the hosts a three-point margin with 9:28 remaining.
Squadrito netted a goal at 8:59 and Doyle the final score with an assist from Squadrito with just 1:22 left.
UNE junior goalie
Tara Geraghty (Barrington, RI) compiled 18 saves while junior
Marissa Bonitatibus (Yorktown Heights, NY) stopped nine shots for the Golden Bears.
Freshman attacker
Ali Pepe (North Reading, MA) had the other WNEC goal. Sophomore defender
Veronica Miano (Southington, CT) compiled 10 ground balls with junior defender
Nicole Poli (Medfield, MA) getting five caused turnovers and seven ground balls.
