SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England College field hockey team captured its first win of the season by topping Regis 2-0 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) opener for both squads Saturday night (Sept. 12).
The Golden Bears, who were playing their home opener, are now 1-2.
After a scoreless first half, senior midfielder
Erin Griffin (Lowell, MA) scored the first goal with 14:15 left in the game of a penalty corner as sophomore defender
Shelby Van Huysen (Killingworth, CT) earned the assist.
The Golden Bears would again take advantage of a penalty corner, this time from senior forward
Aimee O'Connell (Rome, NY) who hit the back of the cage with another assist from Van Huysen.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Kaitlyn Hall (Pawtucket, RI) earned the shutout after recording three saves.
WNEC was on the attack throughout, holding a decided 45-3 advantage in shots and 16-6 edge in penalty corners.
Regis freshman goalie
Morgan Mitchell (Ashburnham, MA) was outstanding for the Pride, stopping 32 shots. The Pride falls to 1-2.
Western New England College returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 12) at 1:00 p.m. to take on Castleton in non-conference action at Golden Bear Stadium.
