Westfield State uses strong start to defeat Western New England College

WESTFIELD, Mass. - The Westfield State field hockey team exploded for four goals in the opening half en route to a 5-0 victory over visiting Western New England College Tuesday night (Sept. 7).

The Owls are now 2-0 after their second five-goal outing while the Golden Bears fall to 0-2.

Junior Jessi Gould (Canton, MA) scored three goals for the hosts, including the first one just 5:16 into the game.

Senior Amanda Burns (Hillsdale, NY) and freshman Sarah Pliszka (Enfield, CT) netted the other goals.

Western New England College had a 14-10 advantage in shots and a big 11-1 edge in penalty corners.

Westfield State junior goalie Amanda McCarthy (Westfield, MA) made eight saves, including a penalty stroke with 1:23 left in the game.
