Sara McMurray scores in the 89th minute to lead WNE to 2-1 victory over Curry

MILTON, Mass. – Senior forward Sara McMurray (Enfield, CT) scores a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the 89th minute, to lead Western New England to a crucial 2-1 victory over Curry on Saturday (Oct. 15) in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play at Walter M. Katz Field.
 
With the win Western New England grabs hold of the final CCC playoff spot and improves to 3-10-2 (1-5-1 CCC); while Curry slips to 3-12 (1-6 CCC).
 
After a scoreless first stanza, Curry notched the first goal of the game in the 60th minute as freshman Marissa Tennant (Thompson, CT) scored on a feed from junior forward Kelly Howe (Walton, NE).
 
McMurray answered for WNE just six minutes later to tie the game at 1-1.
 
The game appeared destined for overtime, when McMurray struck at 89:20 to seal the victory for the Golden Bears. She now leads the team with five goals on the year.
 
Western New England kept pressure on throughout as they held a 31-13 advantage in shots; with a 17-11 edge in shots on frame.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Victoria Trezise (Islip, NY) turned away 10 shots to earn the victory in net.
 
Curry junior goalie Samantha Hardy (Pepperell, MA) kept her side in the game by making 15 saves in the losing effort.
 
Western New England returns to action on Tuesday (Oct. 18) as they host Nichols at 3:30 p.m. in a conference match.
