SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior forward
Sara McMurray (Enfield, CT) converted a penalty kick in double overtime to secure a 1-0 victory for Western New England over Nichols in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Tuesday (Oct. 18) afternoon at Suprenant Field.
McMurray placed a her shot in the bottom left corner past the outstretched arms of junior goalkeeper
Maria Lynch (Holbrook, MA) at the 102:04 mark after senior forward
Krista Gangloff (Newington, CT) drew a foul in the box on a fast break opportunity.
McMurray leads the team with six goals on the season.
The Golden Bears held a 16-4 advantage in shots in the contest; and also attempted all eight of the game's corner kicks before finally breaking through in the second overtime session.

Maria DiTommaso (Rindge, NH) had the best chance in regulation for either side in the 89
th minute but WNE sophomore goalie
Victoria Trezise (Islip, NY) was up to the test making a crucial save to send the game to extra time.
WNE had its best chance of regulation in the 6
th minute as McMurray ripped a free kick that was punched out of play by Lynch.
Trezise made two saves to record the shutout victory in net.
Lynch made seven stops in the losing effort.
Western New England improves to 4-10-2 (2-5-1 CCC); while Nichols slips to 5-7-2 (2-4-2 CCC) on the year.
The Golden Bears return to action on Thursday (Oct. 20) as they host Western Connecticut at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference match.
