WENHAM, Mass. - With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Western New England softball team is playing its best ball of the spring. The Golden Bears extended their winning streak to a season high seven games after defeating host Gordon 4-1 and 13-7 Thursday afternoon (Apr. 14) at Bennett Field.
Western New England is now 18-12 overall and 12-4 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC). The Fighting Scots drop to 10-15 and 7-9 in conference play.
Game 1 - Western New England 4, Gordon 1
Once again the junior combination of right-fielder
Rachel Wyrwa (Methuen, MA) and pitcher
Sarah Lempicki (Southington, CT) helped lead the way.
Wyrwa went 2-for-2 and knocked in all four runs for the Golden Bears. She slugged a three-run homer in the third for her 11th round-tripper of the year that tied the school record set by
Stephanie Ganser in 2007 and added a sacrifice fly in the in the fifth.
Lempicki fired a nifty four-hitter allowing no earned runs with just one walk and 12 strikeouts. She now has a 7-3 record.
Sophomore center-fielder
Laura Madaio (Paxton, MA) singled twice and scored a run while senior first base player
Trish Breault (Millville, MA) doubled and scored two runs.
Gordon junior first base player
Emily Borden (Groton, CT)reached base three times with a pair of hits and walk.
Game 2 - Western New England 13, Gordon 7
Breault collected three hits with a run scored and RBI to pace the 12-hit attack. Wyrwa and Lempicki (who served as the designated player) continued their terrific hitting with two hits and three runs scored. Wyrwa doubled twice, stole a base, and had two runs-batted-in. Lempicki singled, homered (for the second time in three games), stole a pair of bases, and had three RBI.
Wyrwa finished with six RBI in the doubleheader to give her 53 for the season that tied the school record set by Ganser in 2007.
Sophomore shortstop
Jeana Longo (Schenectady, NY) added two hits with a runs scored and run-batted-in.
Senior catcher
Elyse Gauvin (Swansea, MA) had a two-run double to highlight a six-run first inning and scored a pair of runs. Junior
Meagan Riemann (Dayville, CT) (5-5) was the winning pitcher.
The Fighting Scots finished with 10 hits as freshman shortstop
Kendall Bukuras (North Falmouth, MA) had two singles, a homer, two RBI, and a run scored. Junior catcher
Elisabeth Cheesman (Winslow,ME) added a single and run-scoring double.
