NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Western New England women's cross-country team had a solid showing in its season opener finishing in ninth place among 16 schools at the Smith Coed Invitational Saturday (Sept. 10).
The Golden Bears had five individuals finish in the top half of the 181-runner field and within 25 seconds of one another.
Sophomore
Alana Regan (Tewksbury, MA) came in 71st with a time of 23 minutes, 11.26 seconds over the 5,000-meter campus course to pace the Golden Bears.
"Alana had a terrific performance," said WNE coach
Brian Walsh. "She stuck to her training this summer and ran more mileage than ever before. This helped her improve by 58 seconds over last season."
Senior
Alyssa Marsden (Wakefield, MA) also had a fine showing by finishing 73rd in 23:15.74 with sophomore
Maura McCusker (Westford, MA) 74th in 23:19.88 and senior co-captain
Lindsay Tencza (Middletown, CT) 75th in 23:20.76. Junior co-captain
Hannah Laviolette (Three Rivers, MA) took 79th in 23:36.09.
Wellesley captured top honors with a score of 29 with Coast Guard second (34), Salve Regina third (109), Clark fourth (137), and host Smith fifth (1390.
CGA freshman
Beth Gollin was the only runner to break the 20-minute mark in the race capturing top honors with a time of 19:43.94 in her college debut.
