CASTLETON, Vt. – Sophomore forward
Blake Wardwell (Bridgewater, VT) scored a pair of first half goals to lead Castleton to a 3-1 win over Western New England on Sunday (Sept. 11) afternoon at Spartan Stadium.
The Spartans jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just 39 seconds in when Wardwell scored on a loose ball in front of the cage.
Junior midfielder
Caitlin Briggs (Germantown, NY) made it 2-0 at the 7:06 mark, pouncing on a rebound off the pad of Western New England junior goalkeeper
Kaitlyn Hall (Pawtucket, RI).
Wardwell then stretched the lead to 3-0 for Castleton in the 17th minute by converting another loose ball in front of the net.
Hall made a total of 10 saves in the contest to keep the Golden Bears within striking distance.
Castleton held a 25-16 edge in shots in the game, despite being outshot 10-8 in the second half by Western New England. The Golden Bears also had a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Sophomore midfielder
Jaynie Mueller (Colorado Springs, CO) scored an unassisted goal off of a rebound to get WNE on the board with just 52 seconds remaining in the contest.
Senior goalkeeper
Bridget Dusha (Greenwish, NY) made four saves over the opening 57 minutes of action for the Spartans, while freshman goalie
Jessica Galatioto (Queensbury, NY) recorded seven saves in the game.
Western New England returns to action on Tuesday (Sept. 13) to host WPI at 7:00 p.m.
