SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior forward
Sara McMurray (Enfield, CT) tallied a pair of goals to lead Western New England to their first win of the season in a 2-1 victory over Mount Holyoke on Tuesday (Sept. 20) afternoon in a non-league match at Suprenant Field.
WNE struck first as McMurray capitalized on a penalty shot in the 11th minute after a foul was called in the box on Mount Holyoke.
The Golden Bears maintained their 1-0 edge until the 74th minute, when freshman
Hannah Yee (Amherst, MA) slotted home a chance after gaining control of a loose ball in the middle of the box.
McMurray put the Golden Bears back on top just four minutes later, as she finished a fast break chance that was set up by senior defender
Samantha Lewis (Mystic, CT).
The Lyons continued to apply pressure down the stretch with their best opportunity to equalize coming off a free kick in the 87th minute by freshman defender
Amber Legere (Chicopee, MA) which struck off the crossbar and came straight down only to be cleared out by the WNE defense.
Western New England sophomore goalkeeper
Victoria Trezise (Islip, NY) was solid in net as she made five saves to secure the win.
Mount Holyoke junior goalkeeper
Emily Shank (Northfield, MN) made six stops on the afternoon.
The Golden Bears held a slight 12-11 edge in shots; and enjoyed a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Western New England returns to action on Saturday (Sept. 24) as they host Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) rival Salve Regina at 1:30 p.m. on Homecoming.
