BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore guard
Ali Pessolano (Hampden, MA) scored 15 points (all in the second half) and freshman center
Sam McCann (Warren, MA) added 10 points as Western New England defeated Wentworth 64-49 in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest Tuesday evening (Jan. 10) at Tansey Gymnasium.
The Golden Bears, who snapped a six-game skid, are now 3-8 overall and 2-2 in the conference. The Leopards remain winless at 0-11 and 0-4 in CCC play.
Wentworth scored the first 11 points of the game before sophomore guard
Justin King (Ware, MA hit a jumper at the 11:43 mark for the Golden Bears first points. WNE used a 19-7 run in the final 8:38 to trail by one at halftime (26-25).
The Golden Bears took their first lead of the game at 31-30 when Pessolano drained a three-pointer with 16:56 left.
Junior guard
Jordan Biggar (Beverly, MA) made a basket to give Wentworth its last lead at 37-35 with 14:03 to play.
Western New England had a 16-4 run to open up a 51-41 margin following a jumper by senior forward
Sarah Proper (Coxsackie, NY) with 7:19 remaining. The Golden Bears held the hosts to only five points in the final seven minutes.
WNE also received a big lift from its reserves who contributed 27 points and 25 rebounds.
Junior center
Elena Radzikowski (Medway, MA) just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds off the bench.
Proper and junior guard
Shelby Van Huysen (Killingworth, CT) each added eight points. Junior guard
Emily Savino (Ellington, CT) scored only three points, but pulled down six rebounds, dished out five assists, and collected three steals.
Wentworth had three players in double figures with sophomore forward
Kendra Kerr (Marshfield, MA) leading the way with 15 points, nine rebounds, and four steals.
Biggar finished with 13 points and eight rebounds while junior guard
Ashley Conway (Danvers, MA) chipped-in with 11 points. Conway and sophomore guard
Paige Newcomb (Topsfield, MA) each had five assists.
Both squads shot 35% from the floor with Western New England having a 44-32 advantage in rebounds.
