Ali Pessolano and Emily Savino help lead Western New England to 58-54 win over Curry

MILTON, Mass. – Sophomore guard Ali Pessolano (Hampden, MA) scored a career high 17 points and junior guard Emily Savino (Ellington, CT) added 16 points and four steals as the Western New England women's basketball team posted a 58-54 victory over Curry Tuesday evening (Jan. 17).

Senior forward Sarah Proper (Coxsackie, NY) contributed a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds as the Golden Bears improved to 5-9 overall and 4-3 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC). The Colonels drop to 4-9 and 2-4 in conference action.

Western New England, who trailed by as many as 11 in the opening half, shot only 21.4% from the floor and trailed by eight at the break (27-19).

The second half was a complete different story as the Golden Bears took their first lead at 33-32 when Pessolano sank a three-pointer with 16:07 to play. The contest remained close for the next eight minutes with Curry going ahead 45-41 following a layup by junior guard Julia Scrubb (Stowe, VT) at the 8:24 mark.

WNE still trailed by four at 49-45 before scoring 11 straight points capped by a jumper from Savino for a 56-49 advantage with 1:33 remaining.

Junior guard Hailey Rafferty (Worcester, MA) tried to rally the hosts with a three-pointer and layup (following her steal) to get within 56-54 with 1:13 left. The Colonels missed their next three shots and Pessolano sank two free throws with 10 seconds remaining to ice the win.

Junior center Elena Radzikowski (Medway, MA) chipped-in with six points and six rebounds for Western New England.

Rafferty finished with a game-high 19 points with nine rebounds and a pair of steals. Freshman guard Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, MN) was the other Curry player in double figures with 13 points. She also had seven rebounds along with sophomore guard Katie King (Dorchester, MA).

The Golden Bears shot 54.5% from the floor in the second half and 37.5% for the game.

The Colonels had a rough shooting showing making only 29.4% of their field-goal attempts.

Western New England also had a 50-41 advantage in the rebounding department.
