Salve Regina defeats visiting Western New England 70-66 in close conference battle

NEWPORT, R.I – Graduate guard Ryan Birrell (Scituate, RI) had a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds as the Salve Regina men's basketball team held off Western New England 70-66 in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball game Tuesday night (Jan. 31) at the Rodgers Recreation Center.

Birrell also added six assists and six steals as the Seahawks (11-7) who remained in first place in the CCC with a 10-2 mark.

Sophomore forward Scott St. Lawrence (Litchfield, NH) added 13 points off the bench and sophomore guard Isiah Pringle (Queens, NY) chipped-in with 11 points for the hosts who shot 46.0% from the field.

Western New England had four players in double figures led by senior guard Andre Shaw (New York, NY) with 17 points. Junior guard Damon Alston (New Britain, CT) contributed 16 points.

Sophomore forwards Daniel Minto (West Hempstead, NY) (14 points, 12 rebounds) and Dennis Rinaldi (Harrison, NY) (12 points, career high 17 rebounds) each compiled double-doubles.

Sophomore guard Ryan Mickiewicz (East Longmeadow, MA) dished out eight assists.

Western New England had another solid start moving to an eight-point lead (14-6) seven minutes into the contest, but trailed by two (33-31) at the break.

Birrell made two free throws to give the Seahawks a 46-37 advantage with 15:25 to play before the Golden Bears rallied to finally tie the contest at 64-64 following a layup by Shaw with 3:48 remanining. St. Lawrence hit a jumper 20 seconds later to give SRU the lead for good as Western New England scored only two points down the stretch.

Western New England shot a respectable 44.8% from the floor and held a 39-31 advantage off the boards, but hurt itself with 20 turnovers (SRU had 11) that led to 25 points for the Seahawks.

Salve Regina won the earlier meeting between the teams (74-56 on January 12 in Springfield) to sweep the season series.
