NEWPORT, R.I – Junior guard Emily Savino (Ellington, CT) scored 26 points for the second straight game to lead the Western New England women's basketball team to a 55-51 win over Salve Regina Tuesday evening (Jan. 31) at the Rodgers Recreation Center.

She made 9-of-14 field-goal attempts, including three-of-four three-pointers, and all five foul shots. Savino also grabbed eight rebounds, collected three steals, and had a pair of assists.

Junior guard Shelby Van Huysen (Killingworth, CT) made a big contribution by scoring all 10 of her points in the second half. She sank three-of-four shots (and both three-pointers) and made two free throws.

Leading 22-20 at halftime, Western New England fell behind by five points (30-25) before taking the lead for good at 33-32 after Van Huysen drained a three-pointer with 12:49 to play.

The Golden Bears extended their margin to 47-35 when Savino fired-in a three-pointer at the 7:53 mark.

The Seahawks rallied with a 16-4 run over the next five minutes to tie the game at 51-51 after junior guard Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope Valley, RI) made a jump shot with 2:18 to play.

Senior forward Sarah Proper (Coxsackie, NY) made a layup to give WNE the lead for good and Savino converted two foul shots following her steal with 14 seconds remaining for the win. SRU missed four shots in the final two minutes and made a costly turnover.

Sophomore forward Marissa Pendergast (Medfield, MA) led the hosts with 18 points (8-for-18 from the floor) while senior center Lindsay Shorey (Ashland, MA) added 13 points and eight rebounds.
