SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Senior
Caitlin Foster and junior
Alyssa Chamberlain scored two goals apiece to power Western New England University in a 6-3 upset of Smith College in non-conference field hockey action at Golden Bear Stadium on Thursday. The Golden Bears improve to 5-9 while preventing the Pioneers (6-6) from achieving a season-high three-game win streak.
Western New England jumped to a 4-0 lead at the intermission and never looked back. Foster ignited the run with a goal just 1 minute and 14 seconds after the opening whistle, taking a nice pass from
Chelsea Hayes from the left wing. Chamberlain scored twice in the 7th and 31st minutes while
Brooke Kumnick came off the bench to score another tally in the 21st.
The Pioneers, however, didn't roll over as they got on the board in the 42nd minute on Allie Stein's first of her two goals on the night. After Foster's second goal of the game in the 54th minute to put WNE up 6-1, Marissa Vara and Stein scored 1:37 apart beginning in the 56th minute to make things interesting. Stein leads Smith with 20 goals on the season.
Smith did a good job of keeping the WNE defense on its heels, outshooting the Golden Bears 23 to 15 and holding a huge advantage in penalty corners, 15-4. But WNE keeper
Kaitlyn Hall was equal to the task by making 12 saves.
The Golden Bears were very opportunistic by creating numerous quality scoring chances on fewer shots, driving to the cage and causing traffic in front of Smith keeper Nora Demick (9 saves). For example, Western New England scored three times on rebound shots. In addition,
Shelby Van Huysen fired a shot from well beyond the striking circle but the ball was tipped into the goal off a defender's stick for a 5-0 lead at the time.
