CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--After dropping the opening set, Western New England came from behind to claw Rivier 19-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-18 during the first day of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Quadrangular Volleyball Tournament. The Golden Bears improve to 17-3 on the season after earning their fourth win against no defeats on a neutral floor, while the Raiders sink to 14-7.
Devyn Frank paced the Golden Bears offense with 16 kills versus only one error in 33 attack attempts, good for a .455 hitting percentage.
Tyler Singh added five kills, three service aces and four blocks, and
Heather Mears had 31 assists.
Defensively, reigning Commonwealth Coast Conference Libero of the Week
Grace Kucharski made 17 digs,
Inna Sergeychik posted 10 and
Kendra Ouimette recorded seven. In addition, Kucharski (2), Sergeychik (2) and Ouimette (3) combined for seven aces. Sergeychik also had three blocks.
Freshman
Emily McGran entered the match in the second set and after a slow start with several attack errors, she finished strong by spiking six kills on her final 11 swings.
"We lost the serve and pass game in the first set. Our passing struggled which led to a poor offense, but we never stopped working hard or believing in each other and we bounced back well in second set," Western New England coach Bret Stothart said after tonight's match. "We were able to keep the pressure on them after that.
"Heather did a great job balancing the offense and forcing the ball to our hot hitters at the right times," he said.
In other tournament action, the host MIT Engineers swept Bridgewater College 25-23, 25-23, 25-17.
Tomorrow, Western New England plays MIT at 11 a.m. and then Bridgewater at 2 p.m.
