SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The University of New England scored two goals in the first half and then had to hold off a furious Western New England University rally to edge the Golden Bears 2-1 in Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey action at Golden Bear Stadium on Saturday evening. The Nor'easters increase their record to 7-6 overall, including 4-2 in the CCC, while the Golden Bears fall to 5-10 and 0-6 in the conference.

Chelsea Hayes scored her fifth goal of the season to cut UNE's lead to one with 5 minutes and 47 seconds left in the game. Senior back tri-captain
Shelby Van Huysen assisted on the play by taking a shot from near the top of the striking circle and Hayes was able to tip it into the upper-left corner of the cage. But Western New England couldn't get the equalizer to force overtime, making several upfield passes but unable to get off another shot.
Goals by Hannah Tavella and Brittany Liptak in the 19th and 31st minutes, respectively, staked UNE to a 2-0 lead by the intermission.

Kaitlyn Hall kept her team close by making 10 saves while facing heavy offensive pressure as the Nor'easters outshot the Golden Bears by an 18 to 4 margin overall (13 to 4 shots on goal).
UNE whipped Western New England, 7-1, in the teams' last meeting on Sept. 15 in Biddeford, Maine.
